Thanks Nick for the clearer explanation.

I have discussed this in a MATLAB/Octave chat room, and someone pointed out
that the reshaping behavior was mentioned a few years ago in an official blog
post:

See the the bullet point "Indexing with fewer indices than dimensions".
Unfortunately only the RHS case was considered, and no mention of what the
expected outcome is for LHS expressions, especially when growing the array...
