Follow-up Comment #26, bug #45509 (project octave): I'm going to shelve this unless you all have a better solution for CentOS 6 users than this. I changed my gnome-terminal profile preferences (under Title and Command) to *Run a custom command instead of my shell* which I set to: env TERM=xterm-color /bin/bash Now every time I start a gnome-terminal, it's setup to handle this whole escape sequence issue if I ever run into it again.
