Follow-up Comment #5, bug #45808 (project octave):

I think the attached patch fixes the problem.  There was already some logic to
handle not recycling through the list but it didn't correctly handle the case
of literal or whitespace conversions at the beginning and end of a format with
a limited number of conversions.
