My feeling from reading the cygwin docs (a.o. the stanzas quoted below in
comment #20) is that your recommendation would especially apply to cygwin.
On Windows itself it isn't all that bad, provided Octave core functions that
handle file paths invoke proper fileseps.
With this bug fix I suppose the OF-geometry issue should be solved as well.
