I just took a quick look at this patch, it seems mostly ok to me. I haven't
tested it or looked thoroughly enough to push it yet, but I think it's a
strong start.

If anything your commit msg is a little too wordy, Something like


* input.cc (dir_word_breaker): New function.


is sufficient.

I'd be interested in testing what the behavior is for directories with odd
characters in them: a directory with a hyphen or other operator characters,
directories that contain quotes or semicolons, etc.
