Details:

Tick labels are currently displayed as %e formats in log axes. I find this
ugly (and not ML compatible but that is not so important here) so I'll attach
a patch when I have a bug n#.

There is a drawback though: until Octave has the ability of printing
superscripts (see progress in bug #31468), the image output will be displaying
e.g. "10^{2}" which in turn is not better (if not worst) than the current
"1e2".
