Follow-up Comment #1:

This is annoying.  Apparently the input checking within Perl regular
expressions is getting stricter.  I think I fixed it in this cset
(http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/b76162d57ead).

You can check with


cd doc/interpreter
hg stat -un | xargs rm
cd ../../
make |& tee mymake.log
grep "left brace in regex" mymake.log


where I assumed a csh shell for the make command, but easy enough to rewrite
for bash.
