Follow-up Comment #15, bug #46536 (project octave):

Yes, jwe.  I was assuming that the splitting was so that subsref would work,
but I was assuming the reason for not splitting *all* cases was efficiency. 
Is there another reason not to split after each () and perhaps after each {}?
