Follow-up Comment #6, bug #46923 (project octave):

That is because 4.0.x do not use osmesa to print figures for the manual. Sorry
for not being more explicit.

Please try printing an invisible figure with 4.0.1rc3, e.g.


figure (1, "visible", false);
peaks
print test.png


This works for me but I expect it will fail on Ubuntu 14.04, with either 4.0.x
or with the dev version, and there is nothing specific about the dev version
that causes this bug, it's the system libraries.
