No worries, Torsten. Collaborative debugging is sort of fun :)

For reference I'm attaching my  file-editor-tab.cc with the debugging info. 
I'm not sure if that will work in your system.

The backout patch was with a few other patches installed, such as the one to
fix the bug that Torsten pointed out.  It's getting a bit late here; tomorrow
I'll try to produce a clean backout from the current tip.
