Follow-up Comment #5, bug #45659 (project octave):

More useful would be the hg id (if building from the mercurial sources).  We
already had a discussion about that in the comments for another bug report.

For releases, I don't think there's much we can do that is better than using
the version number.  It would be difficult to know whether the build is from
modified sources.  Well, I suppose that's true for builds from the mercurial
sources as well...
