Markus: I checked in your changeset then another one to make the changes I was
suggesting in comment #17:

I tested it by doing "make dist" and then building from the tar.gz file.  Both
were out-of-source-tree VPATH builds.

Now I'm wondering whether it would be better to store a universal time stamp
(Unix time?) instead of the local time and date.
