Follow-up Comment #11, bug #47974 (project octave):

More musings.

The real problem seems to be that setting the 'visible' property on the axes
objet to 'off' removes ticks and labels, but does not remove the actual lines
of the axis.

plot (1:10)
set (gca, 'visible', 'off')
