Follow-up Comment #3:

There are indeed many problems reported by people using the binary Nvidia
video driver. I'll update the summary to reflect that for later searching, but
not much else I can do to help you debug this than recommend that you try the
nouveau driver, or use gnuplot which avoids OpenGL and any related problems.

If you want to help debug why Nvidia's OpenGL implementation causes so many
problems with Octave, please feel free to dig into it.
