Follow-up Comment #69, bug #47974 (project octave):

The gnuplot toolkit is sort of doing these things already.  E.g.,


      case "."
        pt = pt2 = "7";
        if (isfield (obj, "markersize"))
          obj.markersize /= 3;
        else
          obj.markersize = 5;
        endif


and


    if (! isequal (pt, pt2) && isfield (obj, "markerfacecolor")
        && ! strcmp (obj.markerfacecolor, "none"))


Just how accurate this is behaving overall though, in terms of pixels, isn't
something I've looked at.  I'll follow bug
