Follow-up Comment #1, bug #48284 (project octave):
OpenGL graphics are notoriously fragile on Mac OS X. Try switching to the
gnuplot toolkit.
graphics_toolkit gnuplot
plot (1:10)
If that works, add the first line which sets the graphics toolkit to your
.octaverc file. After that, every invocation of Octave will use gnuplot.
