John, I've been convinced that we shouldn't get rid of the tests entirely.  I
like Rik's suggestion of "xtest" for the release, and "test" again afterwards.
 I've posted my reasoning to the mailing list.

Mike, that's good sleuthing.  Are you suggesting taking the code from a recent
version of glibc and using that if the system library suffers from roundoff? 
That sounds like a good option for after the 4.2.0 rush.

In light of JWE's comments, I'm re-opening this as "In progress".
