Details:

Ubuntu 16.04 

Within the gui using qt graphics toolkit: 

plot(1:10)

Closing the figure window.

again plot(1:10)

Then I select the zoom in tool and click somewhere in the plot. 

octave exited with signal 11

Same thing happens with Octave 4.0.3 built from sources.

I'll downgrade now to Ubuntu 14.04.4 and try again.
