Follow-up Comment #15, bug #36067 (project octave):

I pushed the following changeset:

I think this avoids the crash when calling exist, though of course actually
executing a function like causessegfault.mex will crash Octave.  I don't think
that is something we will be fixing any time soon, but if someone has an idea
about how to do that efficiently rand reliably, go ahead and propose a
solution.
