Update of bug #36067 (project octave):

                  Status:          Ready For Test => Confirmed              
                 Summary: bug in exist() when checking for a faulty mex/oct
file => faulty mex/oct file with bad pointer assignments can crash Octave

I verified jwe's fix.

I've re-titled the bug report to reflect the remaining issue, which is indeed
difficult to resolve.
