Follow-up Comment #1, bug #48566 (project octave):
The attached changeset adds that syntax to axis.m, adds a check for isnumeric
and adds a test for that.
I also changed the markup for the input arguments. At the moment, the
arguments are typeset with two different fonts in the pdf which looks odd to
me.
Additionally, I changed "tic" to "tick" in the docstring and figure titles in
the demo.
Not sure whether "tick" should also be made a synonym for the option "tic".
The Mathworks seems to spell the axis ticks with a "k" all over the place.
Since that option is Octave's own syntax, I guess we can spell it whatever we
want...
