Carnë, yes of course, I was just too busy to do so right now, 
and wanted to make sure the issue is not considered closed until I have time
to write a longer answer. 

I'll come back to this ASAP.

Anyway, in short, I find arguments from Rik and Lachlan more convincing than
yours, and I don't see your arguments as a good enough reason for Octave to
deviate from Matlab compatibility here.
