Follow-up Comment #1, bug #48626 (project octave):
Nice examples. Consider adding as two separate demos to the patch routine.
The mid-range color is valuable because it is easy to have the color range
computation incorrect and still end up with extremal values (in this case
purple and yellow).
Attached is a simple change that seems to work. I understand what the code is
doing, but of course there are so many property values and scenarios that I'm
not sure this covers everything. But, I too wonder why if there is a color
value available why it should not be used in preference for the
z-coordinates.
