Follow-up Comment #3:

Thanks, that confirms that macOS awk cannot produce the right output file, the
way the script is written now (see libinterp/build-env-features.sh).

(http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/octave-maintainers/2016-09/msg00193.html),
same applies for awk vs gawk, we need to decide whether we value _portability_
of these scripts to any version of sed/awk, or _features_ for easier
maintenance and testing. I can't say, I don't write most of these scripts.
