Follow-up Comment #12, bug #49130 (project octave):

Oh, OK.  So direct means index directly to the colormap, no scaling.  What
sort of threw me off was the association with "true color" data, but I guess
logically there is nothing indicating those two scenarios should be treated
similarly.  So, true color data is the one that should be treated as an 8-bit
unsigned, limit-wise.  I'll pass the mode setting into the mapcdata() routine
and see if all three scenarios can be addressed there.
