Follow-up Comment #8, bug #49223 (project octave):

Sure it has to do with gnuplot, but not alone, because octave 4.0.3 gives
correct results using the very same gnuplot version (5.0.4).

gnuplot is more convenient for me because I need to output plots and also
(processed) images, and the later are badly compressed to jpeg with a
noticeable loose of quality when exported by the gl2ps engine, whereas gnuplot
keeps them with the original quality. I couldn't find a way to make gl2ps
export images without jpeg compression.
