Follow-up Comment #3:
Please swap the attached chknmrange.m with the one in the subdir given by the
following commands:
pkg load io ## if io wasn't already loaded
strrep (which ("xls2oct"), "xls2oct.m", "private")
then try again the offending xlsread commands, and report back whether it
fixed the problem for you.
