Follow-up Comment #21, bug #49222 (project octave): Taking into account bug #43099, I think I'll adapt the fixes I pushed so that the utf82native conversions and _vice versa_ need to be requested explicitly by the user with the options struct in oct2xls / oct2ods / xls2oct / ods2oct functions. That leaves users on older Windows versions at least an option to display umlauts etc. in the terminal.
