Follow-up Comment #2, bug #49294 (project octave): Ok this is pretty much the same issue as seen in this bug: https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?47355 GNU make ALWAYS defines CC and CXX even if they are not set, so CXX ?= somethingoptional_if_CXX_is_not_set, is never actually used.
