Follow-up Comment #1:
The "list" feature was intentionally removed in Octave 4.2. You can read about
it in the release notes (type "news" in Octave).
The replacement for this feature is to look at the help for colormap (type
"help colormap" in Octave), which now contains a table listing all of the
known built in colormap names.
