Follow-up Comment #9:
Well at least this is a clue. Maybe "run-octave" is only meant to be launched
from a terminal, unlike the prefix/bin/octave which does the job of forking
and detaching from the launching terminal. Are you all running "run-octave"?
Removing KDE from the summary.
