Follow-up Comment #1:
Okay. I don't think anyone from the Octave team knew what the desired
behavior was. I flipped the orientation of vertical sliders in this changeset
(http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/7b95435e96a4). This is on the
development branch of Octave which will be released as 4.4.0, but there is no
date for that yet. In order to see the change you will need to wait for the
next stable release, or build from development sources.
