Follow-up Comment #5, bug #51512 (project octave):

Not even that, but regexps can be tuned as well. Speed differenes between slow
and fast regexps can be up to tens of percents.
There's a bit of hidden literature bout it on the web and I think Rik knows a
lot about it.

I think the cellfun stuff you wrote could be much faster if the actual
contents (is_bool_value) were written in C++

Be sure to benchmark with large spreadsheets (10,000 rows by -say- 1000
columns or so).
