Follow-up Comment #1:

The version of Octave that you are using, 4.0.0, is deprecated and no longer
supported.  The current stable version is 4.2.1.  I ran your sample code in
that version and the ycolor attribute is always respected and the labels and
axes turn red.

I suggest upgrading to the current stable version for better results.
