@Dan: Can you copy and paste your comments in to the Task tracker item for
this (https://savannah.gnu.org/task/?14243)?  This bug report is closed and
won't be viewed by everyone who might be modifying legend.m

legend.m is very, very tricky and there are a lot of hacks to get Matlab
conformance.  Even good ideas, like dropping "UserData", can have weird side
effecs.  I'm reminded of the Alexander Pope quote, "Fools rush in, where
angels fear to tread".  I try to avoid legend.m if I can.
