Follow-up Comment #5, bug #53013 (project octave):

Unfortunately, we are not first and are bound by convention.  Octave tries to
be better than Matlab, but in some cases this is impossible.  As you point
out, definining the ordering relationship is arbitrary.  We have an arbitrary
choice by Matlab that we follow, but with an extra effort to be consistent
about applying that choice.
