Follow-up Comment #25, bug #53005 (project octave):

This bug report is about performance.  I think the question of format might
better be continued under bug #53000.

I added bug #53044 about adding an extensible right-click menu that could run
user-created callbacks.

One can search through the bug reports using the terms "Variable Editor".  The
reports which are still open and relevant are

bug #53000 : display format, including of '0'
bug #51849 : clear should not set everything to 0
bug #51847 : V.E. and display of structs
bug #53033 : editing of empty numeric cells
bug #53004 : segfault with very large arrays
bug #53002 : keyboard shortcuts
