Follow-up Comment #4, bug #52996 (project octave):

Can you try changing some options and let us know if they also crash for you?

For example try

* starting jackd with -d dummy instead of -d alsa
* starting jackd with the -r or --no-realtime option

Since you are using Ubuntu, you should be able to install debug symbol
packages (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Debug%20Symbol%20Packages) and use gdb to
share a stack trace at the point of the crash on your system
(https://wiki.octave.org/Debugging_Octave).
