Follow-up Comment #48, bug #45659 (project octave):
I think I configured with
$ ../configure CPPFLAGS=-I/usr/include/hdf5/serial
LDFLAGS=-L/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/hdf5/serial
At least this is what config.log says in the beginning. But I was messing
around with the settings before. I'll try again after a make maintainer-clean,
bootstrap, configure, make cycle.
