Follow-up Comment #13, bug #53046 (project octave):

Oops, something is broken with initialization so if you start with a value
that can't be edited, it doesn't work.  But if you switch from one that can to
one that can't, it does.

So try this instead:


x = rand (10);
openvar x
## make VE visible, you should see spreadsheet display.
x = rand (10,20,30)
## VE display should switch to simple display of 3-d array.
