Follow-up Comment #18, bug #53046 (project octave):

Dan:  After using it for a while, I think it was the wrong decision to omit
the numbers from the columns when adding new elements in those empty cells is
allowed, for the same reason you note.  I'm going to restore them.  I don't
think they need to be displayed in a different color.  People who use
spreadsheets know that empty cells don't contain anything/are outside the
bounds of the data.
