@Hartmut: Thanks for your review, and for your help in the corners issue.

Attached new version + diff version with better documentation
and more tests.

About your questions:

* I do not know if we want version (A) or (B). We can add them both with
another keyword.
*  "more elaborate cases": I have tried to use the "rice" image, but it seems
that it's compatible now
* Optimization: I did not do a benchmark check. When writing this code, I have
tried to make it correct, but did not try to make the code optimized, so
prbably there is a place for optimization.
