Follow-up Comment #5:
Alas, this is a known collection of issues. There is already a bug report
about linewidths (On screen measure is in pixels, printing width is in
points), font substitution (shouldn't happen), alpha transparency of grid
lines (completed and working on dev branch), etc.
OctConf 2018 is coming up in 3 weeks and one of the topics is going to be
improving WYSIWYG plotting.
I'm marking this as a duplicate and closing it, but it is understood that this
area of Octave needs improvement.
