Follow-up Comment #9:

This bug is reported against the development branch, but the code causes a
segfault on stable as well.  Changing the release in this bug report to
4.2.1.

I applied Philip's patch on the stable branch as a quick fix.  See
http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/e098b0fb11ab.

I'm testing Dan's patch with MXE, but that will take an hour or two.
