Details:

There was a report of undesirable behavior of floated variable editor panels
disappearing from view when the variable editor itself goes out of focus
inside this bigger bug report that is now closed:

Let's continue this here and confirm it is still happening (I can't reproduce
on Cinnamon).

There was a patch here:

as well as a several posts between those two entries regarding this issue.

I'm not clear if the issue has been fixed by the patch.  Hopefully it is
simply a matter of applying the patch, but it may need slight adjustment
because there has been cleanup of the whole variable-editor.cc file since
closing report #53046.
