Details:

I have built Octave from sources and am getting error messages related to the
graphics subsystem. 

Just entering graphics_toolkit("fltk") (or gnuplot for that matter) give a
number of lines such as this:
    ishandle at line 41 column 10
    ishghandle at line 41 column 10
    ishandle at line 41 column 10
    ishghandle at line 41 column 10
    ishandle at line 41 column 10
    ishghandle at line 41 column 10
    ishandle at line 41 column 10
    ishghandle at line 41 column 10
    ishandle at line 41 column 10
    ishghandle at line 41 column 10
    isfigure at line 37 column 10
    graphics_toolkit at line 63 column 5

In fact entering "close all" from the command prompt gives the same behavior.
