Follow-up Comment #8, bug #53241 (project octave):

echo accepts quotations on my system:


linux@ ~/octave/bug/53275 $ echo "ndims: \ "
ndims: \ 
linux@ ~/octave/bug/53275 $ 


In the verbatim above, note that the space after the reverse-slash is present.
 That should get rid of the trailing whitespace.  (Not sure about MXE, etc.)
