Follow-up Comment #16:

I think this can be considered fixed. For the sake of consistency, as derived
from this discussion, Octave 4.4 will act as a command interpreter with no GUI
unless otherwise directed. The only way to start the Octave GUI will be
"octave --gui", or "octave --force-gui" to remain backwards compatible. The
state of stdin has no bearing now on whether the GUI is started.
