Follow-up Comment #4, bug #53456 (project octave):

I'm not opposed to removing the limit.  Maybe we should just have an
(optional) warning if it is set to more than 16.  The warning could say that
generally, double precision numbers have about 16 meaningful decimal digits
(and 7 for single).  Would that be OK?
