Follow-up Comment #61, bug #53006 (project octave):

Release buggy software and expect more bug reports, in triplicate. Someone
has to address all of those, and frankly there aren't the resources to do so,
evidenced by the new entries in Savannah in the past few weeks and half of
that long list is still pink. I could add a few more bugs to the list
concerning the way Variable Editor does select-cut-and-paste, but why overload
the whole thing when there are so many others to address?

There has now been in the past months changes to finally address that NVidia
driver build problem and changes that add another QtHelp package requirement
(for the GUI, and for constructing the .qhc file). Based on bug reports like
this

https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?53454

I suspect there are going to be a lot of systems running into build errors and
the user not knowing how to proceed forward.

Here's the bug fix list

https://wiki.octave.org/Bug_Fix_List_-_4.4.0_Release

which isn't even so far as to identify the bugs that need fixing, so how can
one conclude there is even some goal to meet?

Here's the discussion thread on 4.4 release:

http://octave.1599824.n4.nabble.com/Re-Release-4-4-plans-td4685998.html

in which Rik states he doesn't think 4.4. could be done at the end of March,
but yes 4.2.2 should be ready at the end of the year...which ended up being
Mar 13, 2018.
